Desi Kalakaar: Adventures of Sonakshi Sinha and Yo Yo Honey Singh

Desi Kalakaar: Adventures of Sonakshi Sinha and Yo Yo Honey Singh
A still from Desi Kalakaar featuring Yo Yo Honey and Sonakshi Sinha
New Delhi: First things first, the song Desi Kalakaar is Yo Yo Honey Singh's latest attempt at giving his international hip hop desires wings. The song moves away from his usual 'booze, babes and party only' style, and makes a good first impression. Neither it is an annoying dance track, like his Aata Majhi Satakli which has faced the ire of Bollywood music fans online, or on the lines of the likes of Sunny Sunny, Dope Shope. From the looks of it, it seems like Desi Kalakaar will rule the radio for weeks to come.

As for the video, Sonakshi Sinha and Gulshan Grover add a Bollywood flavour to the experience. The song begins with Honey Singh calling up his girlfriend, Sonakshi, to know about her father's (played by Gulshan Grover) decision about their relationship. She lets him know in clear terms that her LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department) obsessed dad will not agree to her marrying a singer.

The subsequent bit of the video follows Honey Singh as he picks up Sonakshi from her place and elopes with her into the wild west in a drool worthy classic American muscle car. What follows is an infinitely long car chase sequence and some showing off from the 'Superstar' as cops , at Gulshan's behest, track them and arrest him. The climax of the video leaves room for a sequel to easily whizz through in no time.

Honey Singh is his usual self but Sonakshi delivers a barely believable performance. The audience has to be strapped to a chair and forced to accept her as a girl from Los Angeles. When the rapper's ride seems more attractive than the leading lady opposite him, it really questions the star value the makers were trying to add to the video in the first place. Gulshan Grover was his delightfully mean self, except with a desi twang. But given his limited screen time, his presence does not stand justified. We would have loved to see more of him. Also, we would definitely want to ask him why is he waiting in the middle of a freeway among his cop-buddies dressed in a 'Kimono'.
