Bollywood is an industry which is ruled by good looks when it comes to its leading men like Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra.
While stars may get different ratings when it comes to their acting prowess, they certainly deserve a 5 star rating when it comes to their looks.
On November 16, 2011, however, Dhanush, a National Award-winning actor from the southern film industry, became a star pan-India with his song Kolaveri Di. The video and the song became an instant hit in the viral circuit with around 9 crore hits on YouTube. Everybody suddenly wanted to know more about this man, who was far from the Hindi film hero material, but quite charming nonetheless.
But if he had to enter the world of Hindi cinema, Dhanush had to overcome two major obstacles: His unconventional looks and the inability to speak in Hindi. In his interview with NDTV, Dhanush struggled hard to come up with "Mujhe Hindi nahi aata."
However, director Anand L Rai, who had full faith in Dhanush's ability as an actor, cast him as the male lead opposite Sonam Kapoor in 2013 film Raanjhanaa. The film was a sleeper hit, earning close to Rs 34 crore nett at the domestic box office. A year later, Dhanush has returned to Hindi cinema with Shamitabh, which revolves around a superstar and his aide. The trailer of Shamitabh was launched in Mumbai on Tuesday and while curiosity among the audience was paramount to hear Dhanush speak, the trailer had Mr Bachchan's baritone all over it. "I get to experiment with my roles in Hindi cinema," said Dhanush. The trailer of Shamitabh shows Mr Bachchan playing an alcoholic.
What remains to be seen is what does Shamitabh stand for? Perhaps sound has much to do with the film as the makers have stressed on the release of audio posters and audio trailers. And while Dhanush sounded rather enthusiastic about the film, we wonder what his character sounds like in Shamitabh.
