Dhanush in a still from Maari
Chennai:
Director Balaji Mohan's upcoming Tamil film Maari, which is an out-and-out comedy, says that the film is exactly how he has always wanted to see actor Dhanush, on screen.
"I have been Dhanush's fan right from his first film. I've always liked him as an actor as well as a star. The way he carries himself in both unconventional as well as commercial roles is amazing. Although I have really appreciated him in his commercial roles, I wanted to see him in a certain way. Maari, in a way, is exactly how I have always wanted to see Dhanush onscreen," Balaji told IANS.
Known for his quirky and unconventional films such as Kadhalil Sodhappuvathu Yeppadi and Vaayai Moodi Pesavum, Balaji is taking a plunge into the commercial stream with his upcoming laugh riot.
"You will get a clear idea of how the film is going to be once you see the trailer of Maari. And that is the kind of film I have always wanted to do. It's a conscious decision to go totally commercial with Maari and break the perception that audiences have created about me. It's not something that happened by accident," added Balaji.
When the director was asked about the challenges of making a film with a star, he said: "It's difficult when your sensibilities are not in that space. My first two films belong to the space that I have created for myself after watching international movies."
"The sensibility, based on which Maari has been made has always been there inside me. I have never felt like traversing into an unknown territory with the film. I felt quite at home working on it," said the Maari director.
In the film, Dhanush will be playing the role of a local hooligan, who always has the catchphrase 'Will finish you off', up his sleeve. Balaji says that he wrote the film exclusively for Dhanush, and would not have made the film if the actor would have disagreed.
The director further clarified that Maari is quite different from Dhanush's blockbuster Vella Illa Pattathari, even though they fall under a commercial bracket.
Balaji, who admires the novelty with which Dhanush performs in every film, added that it had been quite memorable for him to work with the star. "He is a very spontaneous actor and at the same time he thinks a lot. It's a combination that I have rarely seen in actors," said Balaji.
"Dhanush never wants to be treated like a star. He is always preparing on the sets, but it isn't evident to the people around him. It just feels like he performs without any preparation. But I know that he is always thinking about his role and preparing. This is the reason why all his performances are so fresh," said Balaji.
Maari which features Kajal Aggarwal as the female lead, will hit theatres on July 17.
