Mumbai:
Former Miss World Diana Hayden has given birth to a baby girl born out of an egg the 42-year-old star froze eight years ago at a city hospital this month.
Paediatrician Dr Bhupendra Avasthi of Surya Hospital in suburban Santacruz said that both mother and the baby were doing fine and were accompanied by Collin Dick, Diana's husband.
Normally the average weight and length of a new born in India is 2.6 kgs and 48 cms, but Diana's daughter weighed 3.7 kgs and was 55 cms at the time of birth, Dr Avasthi said.
Arya Hayden's birth on January 9 through the egg freezing method just may pave the way for women who are willing to go for motherhood in their late 30s or early 40s, the doctors said.
Gynaecologist Nandita Palshetkar, who froze Diana's egg eight years ago in her clinic facility, claimed it is for the first time that a delivery through egg freezing method has taken place at the age of 42, which is normally recommendable at the age upto 35.
"It was a concept being adopted very rarely by working or professional women who do not want to be mother at the age of 30 or something. But delivering a baby at 42 (years of age) is something amazing and we feel extremely excited," Dr Palshetkar told PTI.
Explaining the technology of egg freezing, Dr Palshetkar said she along with her partner, Dr Hrishikesh Pai brought this technology to India and it is called vitrification technology. Using the technology, they froze 16 eggs of Hayden between October 2007 and March 2008.
"Birth of Diana's daughter would be a big boost to working women that egg freezing really works and could be of help to them, especially to Indian women who often juggle between career and the ticking biological clock," she said.
