Dibakar Banerjee's film Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! will feature Sushant Singh Rajput in the lead
Mumbai: Dibakar Banerjee is ensuring that heis the first director to bring Bengali sleuth Byomkesh Bakshi to Hindi cinemaaudience by buying the rights to all the 30 stories on him byauthor Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay.

Dibakar's film Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! is jointlybeing produced by his production house and Yash Raj Films. The deal has been struck for about Rs 8-10 crore and fromnow on, no one would be able to take up or use any ofByomkesh's stories in any language except in its original language Bengali.

"We have bought all 30 stories. We have left Bengali outof respect to the writer and Bengali people," said Banerjee.

"The idea is to ensure that no one else makes a film onByomkesh till I am done with my franchise or series. If Idon't do that, someone else will pick up another story fromthe series. So there will be multiple Byomkeshs. It willultimately be confusing and detrimental to my film andcharacter's image in the public's eyes."

Dibakar is also planning to turn the stories into graphicnovels.

"It's a dream that we are working on. Right now, I canonly say that much," said the director.

Set in 1942, the film, featuring Sushant Singh Rajput asByomkesh, will show a war-torn Kolkata during the 1940s, as itfollows the first adventure of Byomkesh, who is fresh out ofcollege.

The period thriller will hit theatres in December nextyear.
