Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge released on July 25, 1995 and won 10 Filmfare Awards including four major awards in the Best Movie, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress categories.
London: Cinema lovers have voted DilwaleDulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) as their most favourite featurefilm from the past 100 years of Indian cinema in a pollconducted by Sanona, the UK's largest online Pay Per View(PPV) Indian movie streaming service.

The hit romantic comedy, which starred superstars ShahRukh Khan and Kajol in the lead roles, won 47 per cent of thevotes in the online poll conducted across social networkingsites like Facebook and Twitter, email and via the movieportal itself to coincide with the 100th anniversary of theIndian film industry.

Written and directed by Aditya Chopra, son of thelegendary Bollywood filmmaker Yash Chopra, Dilwale DulhaniaLe Jayenge beat a selection of ten all-time greats whichincluded classics such as Raj Kapoor's Awaara (1951),Mehboob Khan's Mother India (1957) and Ramesh Sippy'sSholay (1975).

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge was among the first Indianfilms to be produced with the large and rich South Asiandiaspora in the West as its target audience.The film introduced the Non-Resident Indian into modernHindi cinema, making overseas desis and scenic foreignlocations the heart and soul of storytelling.

The trans-continental romance filmed in the UK,Switzerland and India was declared an all-time blockbuster andremains the longest-running film in the history of Indiancinema, completing 900 weeks at the Maratha Mandir theatre inMumbai.

The film tells the story of a young couple (Raj andSimran) who fall in love on a European vacation, and relateshow the boy tries to win over the girl's parents so that shecan marry him rather than the groom that her father has chosenfor her.

When it released on July 25, 1995, Dilwale Dulhania LeJayenge received ravereviews from critics worldwide and became the second highestgrossing film of Bollywood in 1990s after Salman Khan's HumAapke Hai Koun.

It was also the second film to surpass the 100 crore markworldwide. In 1996, Dilwale Dulhania LeJayenge won 10 Filmfare Awards including fourmajor awards in the Best Movie, Best Director, Best Actor andBest Actress categories.

It also won National Film Awards for Best Popular FilmProviding Wholesome Entertainment.

Sanona's CMO, Shazia Nizam, is not surprised that anevergreen musical such as Dilwale Dulhania LeJayenge won the poll by a widemajority.

"With Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol's continuing popularity andBollywood's expanding fan base in the UK, Europe and furtherafield, it comes as no surprise that Dilwale Dulhania LeJayenge would be voted the public's most favourite film," shesaid.
