  • At the Emmy Awards, Breaking Bad made good again with five wins, including Best Drama, third-in-a-row Best Actor for Bryan Cranston (his fourth Emmy for playing chemist-druglord Walter White), Supporting Actor and Actress for Aaron Paul and Anna Gunn, and Outstanding Writing - Drama. Bryan Cranston now shares the record for the most Best Actor – Drama wins (four) with NYPD Blue star Dennis Franz.
  • Modern Family won Best Comedy, Best Supporting Actor for Ty Burrell and Best Director - Comedy for Gail Mancuso. Modern Family now ties for the most awarded Comedy with Frasier.
  • Homeland star Claire Danes was denied a three-in-a-row Best Actress - Drama win - the Emmy went to another award stalwart, Julianna Margulies of The Good Wife.
  • Veep actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus did, however, score her hat-trick winning the award for Best Actress - Comedy, her fifth Emmy overall. Jim Parsons won his fourth Best Actor - Comedy Emmy for his role as Sheldon Cooper on The Big Bang Theory. He is now one of four actors with four Best Actor – Comedy Emmys, the others being Michael J Fox, Kelsey Grammer and All in the Family star Carroll O’Connor.
  • Fan favourites Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman won Best Actor and Supporting Actor in a Miniseries and Movie for Sherlock: His Last Vow but disappointingly failed to show up to collect their awards in person. Sherlock: His Last Vow also won Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries or Movie.
  • Mom star Allison Janney and American Horror Story: Coven actresses Jessica Lange and Kathy Bats picked up the remaining acting awards - Best Supporting Actress - Comedy, and Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie.
  • True Detective, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson (both of whom were nominated), won a single award, for Best Director - Drama.

The Emmys were hosted by Saturday Night Live's Seth Meyers and presenters ranged from nominees Julia Roberts, Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson to TV stars Mindy Kaling and Jimmy Kaling.

The show included a special tribute to Robin Williams by fellow comedian Billy Crystal who called the late actor "the greatest friend you could ever imagine."
