Director Farah Khan had a Happy New Year in 2014 and looks set to have one in 2015 as well. As she celebrates her 50th birthday today, here are five times that Farah made headlines over the years.
Om Ashanti Om:
As Salman Khan can testify, Shah Rukh Khan makes both a staunch friend and an implacable enemy. A friendship of almost 20 years was disrupted when SRK and Farah's husband Shirish Kunder brawled at a party hosted by actor Sanjay Dutt to celebrate the success of 2012's remake of Agneepath. As a prelude to the episode, Farah had cast actor Akshay Kumar in her third film, 2010's Tees Maar Khan, having previously delivered the superhit Main Hoon Na and Om Shanti Om with SRK.
There was both a happy ending and a Happy New Year for Farah, who delivered a third blockbuster last year that co-starred Deepika Padukone and Abhishek Bachchan. Farah said in an interview, "This is the best phase of SRK and me as an actor and director. I think we don't take each other for granted anymore. When you lose a friendship like that, you realise the worth of it."
Farah Hain Na
It's no mean feat that in an industry where the balance of power tilts sharply towards the male gender, Farah has transitioned from choreographing films to directing them - and in spectacular fashion. The five time Filmfare Best Choreography Award-winner made headlines when she decided to turn director with Main Hoon Na, starring Shah Rukh Khan. The 2004 film became a blockbuster hit and the second highest grossing Indian movie of 2004. Farah repeated the success with Om Shanti Om in 2007 and, most recently, Happy New Year.
Farah's particular sense of humour led her to spoof veteran actor Manoj Kumar Bollywood choreographer Saroj Khan in Om Shanti Om and Happy New Year respectively. They didn't see the joke. Manoj Kumar even filed a defamation case against actor Shah Rukh Khan which he later withdrew.
The New Bigg Boss Host
Farah has begun 2015 with a bang, taking over hosting duties from Salman Khan on reality TV show Bigg Boss Halla Bol. Her performance as host received Salman's stamp of approval. He tweeted:
Here's wishing Farah a very happy birthday.
