Mumbai:
A petition to stop the release of the youngest of six men who gang-raped and tortured a student on a moving bus in Delhi in 2012 was rejected today by the Supreme Court. The convict, now 20, was released on Sunday from a correctional home - where he spent three years - to a non-profit organization.
Actor Farhan Akhtar spoke to NDTV about this and said that he feels that there is a need of revaluation considering the nature of the crime.
"Whatever its worth, I feel that the judge, the juvenile and the jail authorities have gone by the book. This is the law, that if you are a juvenile and whatever the crime is, this is the maximum punishment you can get. So, definitely I feel that there is a need of revaluation given the nature of the crime. If someone is mature enough to commit a crime of this nature, then I would just imagine that the justice has to be fit that the quantum of punishment has to be that," Farhan told NDTV.
The Delhi Commission for Women had filed a petition after midnight on Saturday stating that the convict had shown no remorse and should be under observation till his mental condition is assessed.
"This is the law. So, we must definitely look at how this can be revaluated in situations like this. It was not that he was caught robbing something, which is one. The second thing is that there are enough experts in the field of psychoanalysis and psychiatry. You don't need one single opinion. You can get three and you can get a combined opinion of these people to really realize that is this boy reformed. I think, that is more important because that is what the juvenile detention centre is meant to do. It is supposed to reform a child and put him back in the world as an adult," said Farhan.
Moreover, Farhan also said that it is important to understand whether the juvenile convict has been reformed in the correctional home. The actor also feels that the law needs to be revalued as he feels that injustice has been done.
"So, is he truly reformed? I think, that it is important to understand because, if for any reason there is a collective opinion that this child, this boy, who is now a man, has not reformed still harbours those instincts, then he definitely should be tried again as an adult. That's really what I felt. I feel that the law definitely needs a revaluation, because it seems that injustice has been done. You cannot sleep saying that this is right. Somewhere, it breaks your conscience," added Farhan.
Farhan will soon be seen in Bejoy Nambiar's Wazir, co-starring Amitabh Bachchan and Aditi Rao Hydari. Wazir is scheduled to release on January 8.
