Fashion gospels commit (un)original sin

Highlights

 • It's a nightmare on Fashion Street. W, Elle and Vogue, three of the most followed style magazines in the world, ended up featuring variations of the same Prada dress on their latest covers.
 • Though the appliqued dress from Prada's diffusion line Miu Miu appears in different colours, there's no fooling fashionistas. While the British Vogue cover shows Danish model Freja Beha Erichsen in a tangerine version, singer Lily Allen and actress Eva Mendes appear in lilac lace and yellow for UK Elle and US glossy W respectively. The comedy of errors has been compounded by the Swedish Elle also featuring model Mona Johannesson in the lilac dress.
 • Celebrities around the world are sometimes caught wearing similar dresses; it is far less common for publications that are considered the last word in haute couture to go so horribly wrong. Press officers of big fashion houses like Prada are careful not to offer the same outfits for rival photoshoots. But given the sheer number of dresses that are sourced, sometimes faux pas like these are bound to happen.
New Delhi : It's a nightmare on Fashion Street. W, Elle and Vogue, three of the most followed style magazines in the world, ended up featuring variations of the same Prada dress on their latest covers.

Though the appliqued dress from Prada's diffusion line Miu Miu appears in different colours, there's no fooling fashionistas.

Celebrities around the world are sometimes caught wearing similar dresses; it is far less common for publications that are considered the last word in haute couture to go so horribly wrong. Press officers of big fashion houses like Prada are careful not to offer the same outfits for rival photoshoots. But given the sheer number of dresses that are sourced, sometimes faux pas like these are bound to happen.

Lorraine Candy, the editor of Elle, has made her disappointment clear. "I'd rather it wasn't on a major rival," she was quoted telling the Daily Mail. But despite the 'Cover Clash' that has left all three magazines embarassed, Candy still waxed eloquent about the Prada dress. "Miu Miu's collection was so amazing so everyone was bound to request it. It's a pretty special dress," she said.

Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman put on a brave face while talking to the Daily Mail. "It's actually not the same dress. Ours is a felted wool, theirs is lace. Ours is orange, theirs is lilac. Theirs has a big black bow on it, ours doesn't... in fact, I hadn't even noticed it until someone rang me asking for my opinion on it," she was quoted as saying.

Given that the Prada dress in question costs between Rs 1-2.3 lakhs ( 1,515-3,210), it is unlikely that we will witness a repeat performance in real life anytime soon.
