Noted film historian BD Garga died in the wee hours this morning following a few days of brief illness. He was 86.
He is survived by his wife Donnabelle Garga and daughter Nicole O'Hara.
The octogenarian was suffering from general weaknessfollowed by jaundice and was admitted in a Patiala hospital for the past 4-5 days, his wife said.
Born in 1924, Garga was one of India's most eminent film scholars. He began working in films under filmmaker V Shantaram.
He made his first documentary, Storm over Kashmir in 1948 and had since then written, directed and produced over fifty documentary films.
In 1996, Garga received the first V Shantaram Award for Lifetime Achievement in the field of documentary films at the Mumbai International Film Festival.
He had more than fifty years' experience as a film journalist and served on various national and international film festival juries.
Garga's book on documentary films, From Raj to Swaraj: The Non-fiction Film in India, won the National Award for the Best Book on Cinema last year.
His latest, Pictorial History of Indian Silent Cinema is due out in September.
