In spite of witnessing a massive dip on the second day, Akshay Kumar's Gold has an "excellent" extended opening weekend, trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted. On Day 5, Reema Kagti-directed Gold has scored Rs 15.55 crore, pushing its total to Rs 71.30 crore. "Gold has an excellent extended opening weekend. Took a dip on Day 2, but gradually picked up from Day 3 to Day 5. All eyes on Monday-Thursday business. Wednesday Rs 25.25 crore, Thursday Rs 8.10 crore, Friday Rs 10.10 crore, Saturday Rs 12.30 crore, Sunday 15.55 crore. Total: Rs 71.30 crore (India business)," he wrote. Gold has done "well" on Sunday (Day 5) and has witnessed an estimated growth of about 30-35%, Box Office India report stated.
"The film has practically doubled its Thursday number on Sunday and has done well to get this far considering the huge 70% fall on Thursday," the Box Office India report added.
Akshay Kumar's Gold released with John Abraham's Satyameva Jayate on Independence Day. The combined business of Gold and Satyameva Jayate is Rs 125 crore approximately, Taran Adarsh tweeted. "The business multiplies on Sunday. Both, Gold and Satyameva Jayate have recorded strong figures over the 5-day extended weekend. Combined business is approximately Rs 125 crore net. Ironically, approximately one-third business [of Rs 125 crore] was accumulated on Independence Day alone," he wrote.
Film critic Saibal Chatterjee, in his review for NDTV, gave Gold 2 out of 5 stars. "Gold is primarily about avenging "do sau saal ki ghulami (200 years of slavery)", so the principal enemy is England, not Pakistan. This is one aspect of Gold that sets it apart from other Bollywood sports films," he wrote.
Gold traces the journey of Tapan Das (Akshay Kumar), a hockey coach, who wants to win Olympic gold for free India. Set in the backdrop of 1948, the film also stars Mouni Roy, Amit Sadh, Vineet Kumar Singh and Kunal Kapoor
