Golden Globes: And the winner will be...

Golden Globes: And the winner will be...
New Delhi: Hollywood's getting it's Sunday best ready for the Golden Globes and here's everything you need to know about this year's show.

Two classic pieces of art will battle it out for the top spot. British monarchy saga The King's Speech and fast-paced Facebook drama The Social Network are at loggerheads for the Best Drama trophy. Both loosely based on real-life stories , the two films couldn't be more different from each other and film buffs are holding their breath to see who takes the top prize.

The King's Speech leads the nominations number game with seven - including Best Dramatic Actor for Colin Firth as Queen Elizabeth II's father, George IV.  Tied at the second spot with The Social Network is boxing drama The Fighter, starring Mark Wahlberg, with six nominations.

Other nominees for Best Drama include Natalie Portman's psychosexual thriller Black Swan. The racy film deals with homosexuality and is another favourite for the top spot. Rounding off the top five is the dream themed Inception, starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Giving Firth tough competition is Jesse Eisenberg, up for Best Male Dramatic Actor as Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network, who funnily fears he is peaking too soon as an actor. If he wins, will he give the award away, as Ving Rhames gave away his award to Jack Lemmon in 1998? We'll be watching.

The Fighter star Mark Wahlberg also grabs an individual nomination for his role as boxer 'Irish' Mickey Ward. While 127 Hours fails to get a Best Drama nomination, actor James Franco manages to make a mark in the Best Actor in a Motion Picture category. Rounding off the top five is Ryan Gosling for Blue Valentine.

Seven time nominee Leonardo DiCaprio, who won for The Aviator in 2004, has been snubbed this year for a Best Actor nomination. Also missing is the year's critical and commercial hit- the Coen brither' reboot of the Western classic True Grit.

Making up for Leo's miss is Hollywood's top dog Johnny Depp with 2 nominations for Best Male Actor in Comedy or Musical. He might win as The Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland, or he might win for his role in The Tourist.

Interestingly, Leo was the last actor to have been nominated twice, for Best Dramatic Actor in Blood Diamond and The Departed in 2006. He didn't win. Nor did Jack Lemmon, who was nominated twice in 1963 for Best Actor Comedy or Musical.

All eyes will be on 10 time nominee Johnny, who won for Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, to see if he can bet the double nomination jinx.

He might lose to Jake Gyllenhaal in Love and Other Drugs, Paul Giamatti for Barney's Version or Kevin Spacey for Casino Jack. Both Johnny Depp's movies, Alice in Wonderland and The Tourist, are in the running for Best Picture Comedy or Musical.

At the head of the leading ladies pack is Natalie Portman, the favourite to win Best Dramatic Actress for Black Swan. Other nominees include- Halle Berry for Frankie and Alice, Nicole Kidman for Rabbit Hole, Jennifer Lawrence for Winter's Bone and Michelle Williams for Blue Valentine, matching co-star Ryan's nomination.

Emma Stone, up for Best Actress Comedy or Musical for Easy A, couldn't believe she was nominated in the same category as Angelina Jolie. Meanwhile, Jolie, nominated for The Tourist, just laughed off the honour. Other nominees include Julianne Moore for The Kids Are All Right, Annette Bening, also for The Kids Are All Right and Anne Hathaway for Love And Other Drugs.

Cancer survivor Michael Douglas, who won Best Actor as Gordon Gekko for Wall Street, is hoping the role will bring in a second win - this time as Best Supporting Actor for Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. He was thrilled with the nomination, saying, 'Boy, was I ready for some good news.' Christian Bale is also in the running for his role in The Fighter.  New Spidey Andrew Garfield was nominated for The Social Network, as were  Jeremy Renner for The Town and Geoffrey Rush  for The King's Speech.

The Globes, the wilder cousin of the stately Academy Awards, is usually an accurate barometer of Oscar predictions. A year ago, four Globe winners -- Sandra Bullock for "The Blind Side," Jeff Bridges for "Crazy Heart," Mo'Nique for "Precious" and Christoph Waltz for "Inglourious Basterds" -- went on to win the Oscar too.

This is when Hollywood lets it hair down. Jack Nicholson once bent over to moon crowd, while Angelina jumped into the pool in her precious Randolph Duke  dress after she won the Globe for Gia. Scarlett Johanssen's big squeeze from designer Isaac Mizrahi still makes news and Christine Lahti's loo break  while her name was being announced never fails to tickle our funny bone. Here, stars have walked the red carpet wearing everything from priceless couture gowns to sneakers - we're looking at you, Whoopi Goldberg (1986).

The Golden Globes also boast of the nastiest hosts. From Borat star Sasha Baron Cohen to last year's Ricky Gervais, there is just no stopping the Globe wagon.
The Office actor Gervais poked fun at some of the biggest starlets last year and is all set to raise the bar up a notch this time again. This year, he says he's going to stick the knife into bad boy star Charlie Sheen.

And for all those who are missing from the nomination lists this year, the main excitement is presenting.  From Leighton Meester and JLo to teenage sensation Justin Beiber  and heartthrobs like Robert Pattinson and Zac Efron, everyone gets a piece of the cake.
