He might be famous for singing Purple Rain but orange was Prince's new black, or new purple if you will, at the Grammy Awards. (Also read: Grammys 2015: List of Winners)
Prince, who presented the Album of the Year Grammy (won by Beck's Morning Phase) showed up looking very Prince-like in shiny top-to-toe orange, brandishing the sparkly rock-and-roll cane he never leaves home without now.
Twitter was awed, describing him by turn as a 'baby carrot' and 'tha gawd.'
In Prince's glorious tangerine wake trailed other celebrities, all put in the shade by His Orange Awesomeness - even Lady Gaga, who can usually be counted on for some sartorial thrills but showed up this year in a regulation sexily cut gown, silver in colour. Madonna, wearing an unfathomable net and corset creation by Givenchy, was perhaps Prince's closest competition.
Beyonce, who went home with three Grammy's that helped her move up the Grammy records list, wore a stunning black Proenza Schouler dress. With 20 Grammy's in all now, Bey has more awards than Aretha Franklin but fewer than Alison Krauss, making her the second most awarded female artiste. Also in anything-but-basic black was Miley Cyrus in peekaboo Alex Vauthier, and Gwen Stefani in a Versace jumpsuit with a part-mesh bodice.
Taylor Swift in stunning turquoise Elie Saab, Rihanna in giant pink Giambattista Valli confection, and Iggy Azalea in cobalt Versace injected a dose of colour into a red carpet populated mainly by black, white and metallic.
Kim Kardashian, vying with Madonna for top spot on the worst-dressed list, showed up wearing a Jean Paul Gaultier ensemble that resembled a glittering dressing gown with epaulettes. Like husband Kanye West, she should have probably stuck to Balmain, the family's go-to designer. Also in shiny outfits were Katy Perry in beaded Zuhair Murad, Nicki Minaj in fringed Tom Ford and Rita Ora in a disco ball Prada dress that covered almost every inch of her in silver sequins.
The Grammys were held in Los Angeles on February 8. British singer Sam Smith had a blockbuster night, winning four of the six awards he was nominated for including two biggies - Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
