New Delhi: Mickey Rooney, screen legend for nine decades and World War II veteran, died on March 6 at the age of 93.

Mr Rooney began his showbiz career aged a year-and-a-half, appearing in stage acts with his vaudeville performer parents. He graduated to bit parts on screen and later became one of the best known stars of the black and white era. His career spanned an incredible nine decades and 200 films, with his last appearance in 2011's The Muppets.

Mickey Rooney was best loved for his appearances as the character Andy Hardy in a series of films, and his performances opposite actress Judy Garland in musicals such as Babes In The Wood. In 1961, he played Holly Golightly's Japanese neighbour in Breakfast At Tiffany's. In 2006, he played one of the veteran night guards in Night At The Museum.

In 1944, Mr Rooney enlisted in the US army and served for 21 months in World War II. He was also among the many Hollywood stars who helped entertain American troops and raise morale. After the war, Mickey Rooney's screen career went into decline and he forayed into television.

Mickey Rooney won a Juvenile Oscar in 1938 and an Honorary Oscar in 1982. He also won two Golden Globes and an Emmy.

The actor was famously married eight times, most notably to actress Ava Gardner. He is survived by his eighth wife, Jan Chamberlin and nine children. A tenth child predeceased him in 2006.

Asked once if he would marry all his wives again, he replied: "Absolutely. I loved every one of them."
