New Delhi: Amitabh Bachchan found himself at least one famous fan in London, where he was receiving the Global Diversity Award in the House of Commons. Among the political leaders at the presentation ceremony was a certain floppy-haired gentleman, well-known from movies such as Four Weddings And A Funeral and Notting Hill.
British actor Hugh Grant tweeted: Great pleasure to help honour @SrBachchan last night. Lovely man as well as legend.
In his address at the ceremony, Hugh Grant said: "It is truly a great pleasure meeting Amitabh Bachchan. He is a gigantic actor, super star who is hugely popular. He is also like a saint in some way because of his charity and animal welfare work. If ever anyone who deserves the Global Diversity Award, it is Amitabh Bachchan. Congratulations."
Mr Bachchan was presented with an award and citation that read: "Amitabh Bachchan first gained popularity in the early 1970s as the 'angry young man' of Hindi cinema, and has since appeared in over 180 Indian films in a career spanning more than four decades. Amitabh Bachchan is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential actors in the history of Indian cinema."
It also said: "He is a Global patron for the diabetes charity Silver Star and last year was presented with a Mobile Diabetes Unit for his home city Mumbai named 'Amitabh' in his honour."
Mr Bachchan, who was among the torch bearers at the Olympic Games held in London last year, said: "I have been extremely overwhelmed by the love and affection of the people of Great Britain."
The ceremony was chaired by British-Asian MP Keith Vaz. John Bercow, Speaker of the House of Commons, presented Mr Bachchan with his award.
