Bollywood stars Katrina Kaif and Priyanka Chopra found themselves uncomfortably under the eye of Income Tax authorities who raided both actresses' homes in Mumbai today.
The raids were reportedly made in connection with suspected tax evasion. Sources said the Income Tax authorities were investigating whether or not the actors had paid taxes proportionate to their income.
Sources say that the Income Tax department has questioned Priyanka Chopra's father and her former personal assistant. Her lockers have also been searched along with the offices of talent management companies Bling and Matrix.
Bling and Matrix is owned by celebrity photographer Atul Kasbekar, which had apparently handled events for the two actresses. Kasbekar was not available for comment.
Being busy in Bollywood can have it's disadvantages as Katrina and Priyanka discovered. Both actresses have made a fair amount of movies, endorsements and international shows in the last two years and they are paid between Rs 3 to 5 crore per film.
Katrina Kaif endorses 10 brands whereas Priyanka Chopra has about 8-10 endorsements in her kitty. Also, Priyanka Chopra was reportedly paid Rs 6 crore for her movie Pyar Impossible that released in 2010.
According to reports, income tax authorities will be examining their tax returns for the last two years. They have seized their bank statements, documents relating to property and investments as well as details of their contracts. Tax authorities are trying to match their income with the taxes they have paid.
