At 5pm on a typically bustling, faintly grey Big Apple day, a bunch of young men and women dressed in sunny yellow burst into a choreographed dance routine, cheered by their delighted audience who whipped out cameras and phones to record the moment.
The flash mob were starting celebrations for the upcoming IIFA weekend early, with a medley of recent Bollywood hits including Balam Pichkari from Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani, Saree Ke Fall Sa from R... Rajkumar and the remixed Disco Deewane.
Midway through, street performers dressed as the Statue of Liberty briefly joined the fun.
IIFA, or the International Indian Film Academy, will hold its annual awards in Tampa Bay, Florida on April 26. Nominees include Shah Rukh Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Sonakshi Sinha and Deepika Padukone who has three nominations in the Best Actress category.
