Imran Khan Campaigns Against New Drinking Age

Imran Khan Campaigns Against New Drinking Age
Mumbai: Imran Khan, former chocolate boy, is turning his talents to crusading. Today, the actor announced that he will file a public interest litigation against the new law in Maharashtra that raised the drinking age to 25.

"If you are old enough to vote, to marry and to have children, then you are old enough to drink" said Imran at a press conference. And just in case you think it's a well planned move on his part with new film Delhi Belly which releases in 14 days- in which he drinks and does a lot worse - in mind, perish the thought. "I have never spoken about my film in relation to this cause. It may seem like a publicity move, but this is something I am doing at a very personal level," says he.

So there's a PIL. And a Facebook page that's going to turn into a signature campaign.

Is this , then, stage two in the great Imran makeover in which the actor swaps his boy-next-door image for one edgier by far? Or is this awakening of social consciousness simply in keeping with Khan tradition? After all, uncle Aamir has been among Bollywood's leading voices in Anna Hazare's campaign against corruption.

Imran, who only drinks occasionally himself, also says he doesn't endorse alcohol consumption. But he's "fighting for every individual's democratic right".

Ironically, as an Overseas Citizen of India Imran will not be allowed to file the PIL himself. Instead, his lawyers will file it on his behalf.
