New Delhi:

In his last film appearance, actor Sadashiv Amrapurkar, winner of Filmfare's first ever Best Villain Award (in 1992 for Sadak), played the ghost of an acting guru - a piece of inspired casting, if ever there was one.

Mr Amrapurkar appeared as struggling actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui's dead theatre coach in Star, director Dibakar Banerjee's contribution to 2013 anthology Bombay Talkies.

In the four-minute scene below, Sadashiv Amrapurkar delivers to Nawazuddin's despondent character not just a mini-masterclass in acting but an important life lesson as well.

"Yeh do second ka role kyun nahi kar sakta main?" asks Nawazuddin - "why can't I do this this two second role?"

"Kyunki tere ko sab gift mein chahiye. Yeh lo hero ka role. Tere ki karke nahi lena, tere ko milna chahiye," replies Sadashiv Amrapurkar - "you want everything as a gift. Here, take the hero's role. You don't want to earn it, you want it handed to you."

If you want something, you have to work for it - a truth that Sadashiv Amrapurkar knew perhaps only too well.
