Kareena and Imran featured together in Gori Tere Pyaar Mein
New Delhi:
There's some debate over who, between Gori Tere Pyaar Mein stars Kareena Kapoor and Imran Khan, were in-charge on set - fuelled by the stars themselves. However, in the kitchen, it's clear Imran's the boss.
In a cook-off organized by NDTV, Imran and Kareena took each other on in a battle of chopping board and frying pan. Gori Tere Pyaar Mein director Punit Malhotra cheered Imran enthusiastically, and expressed frank disbelief over Kareena's skills. Punit himself claimed no expertise in the kitchen at all, confessing to making Maggi and instant coffee as his major accomplishments.
Imran, whose culinary capabilities are well-known in film circles, brought his own supplies and implements to dish up spaghetti bolognaise, which he cooked with lots of garlic, roasted tomatoes, celery, and chicken livers and anchovies in the meat sauce.
"Have you ever seen a hero cook like this," Punit asked NDTV's Aneesha Baig. "I haven't seen many civilians cook like this," she responded.
Imran's recipe for bolognaise is not for the cook-in-a-hurry - it should simmer for a couple of hours, he says.
As Imran's meat sauce bubbled away on the flame, Punit had a story to tell about an epic Gujarati thali the cast and crew ate while shooting Gori Tere Pyaar Mein. This is how good the thali was - confirmed non-vegetarian Punit wolfed down the vegetarian fare, Kareena made a veritable meal of jalebis (14, as she confirmed), and Imran was so intent on his food that he didn't talk "during the meal, before the meal or after the meal."
This is when Kareena makes her entry, 10 minutes into proceedings, immaculate in a printed dress. "They bullied me throughout the making of this movie. I'm so fried, I don't know what to do," said Kareena, looking very much like the bully and not the bullied, long wooden spoon in hand. "You are standing like a school teacher with a ruler in your hand," said Punit, taking a prudent step away from his heroine.
Asked if there was any chance she could be converted back to the dark side of non-vegetarianism and Kareena said she loved vegetables and didn't miss meat, so no. And if you're looking for Kareena's diet secret, here it is - three things on your plate. Although you may not want to try this at home given that, according to Imran and Punit, Kareena's idea of three things includes jalebis, kheer and puris.
Anchovies in spaghetti bolognaise? Kareena wasn't impressed with Imran's recipe and set out to challenge the king of the kitchen, rolling pin in hand. Some help from Punit and a little bit of inadvertent sabotage by Imran later, Kareena served up theplas, a Gujarati delicacy. She's not entirely an amateur in the kitchen, in case you were wondering, though she does admit to not liking the chopping and prepping.
This was the final result of Imran and Kareena's kitchen confidential: one steaming bowl of spaghetti bolognaise, two almost-round slightly-low-on-salt theplas, one fully fed-up film director, and one very impressed TV reporter. Top marks to Imran, pass marks to Kareena. And everyone went home happy.
