Cannes:
India is set to shine at Cannesthis year with the India Pavillion showcasing works by youngfilmmakers like Dibakar Bannerjee and Anurag Kashyap.
The pavillion, right on the beach in what is calledthe Village, has a bright new look, a vast improvement fromprevious years.
The reason could be that the National Film DevelopmentCorporation of India is in charge this time, and on day two ofthe Cannes Film Festival, things seemed organised andpleasing, a stark contrast to last year.
In 2010, the film industry had set up the IndiaPavillion and mucked it up to the dismay of visitors andIndian participants.
"We felt that it was a better idea to let the NFDCtake charge and be accountable for any lapse, rather than letthe seriously divided Indian movie industry organise thepavillion," said DP Reddy, Joint Secretary in the Informationand Broadcasting Ministry.
The NFDC plans to promote six Indian film-makers atCannes, in line with a series of steps being taken to push thecountry's cinema in overseas territories.
This will also help strengthen ties between Indian andforeign film industries. These are days of collaboration, andthe most unlikely of partnerships are happening today.
The six moviemakers to be promoted at the festival areDibakar Banerjee, Anurag Kashyap, Anusha Rizvi, LaxmikantShetgaonkar, Sekhar Kammula, and Haobam Paban Kumar. The NFDC is also planning a gala India Night on May 16on the beach. Several stars from India are expected to attendthe party.
