Mr Jagdish Raj played a police officer for a record 144 times in Hindi films

Veteran actor Jagdish Raj, Bollywood's most memorable police officer, died on July 29, 2013 at his Juhu residence in Mumbai. The actor, who holds the Guinness World Record for playing a police officer in 144 films, succumbed to a respiratory disease. He was 85.
Born Jagdish Raj Khurana in Sargodha (now part of Pakistan), his career lasted from 1955 till 2004. Mr Raj's last film was Meri Biwi Ka Jawab Nahin in which he played a Deputy Inspector General.
However, Mr Raj's debut role in the 1955 film Seema was as a doctor. He was cast as a police inspector for the first time in the 1956 Dev Anand classic C.I.D.
Mr Raj, who appeared in over 260 films, also played villainous roles as well as supporting characters such as a judge.
Some of Jagdish Raj's best known movies include Deewar, Don, Shakti, Imaan Dharam and Silsila.
He is survived by a son and two daughters of whom one is Anita Raj, the actress.
