Chennai: The long wait to watch Kamal Haasan's Vishwaroopam came to an early end for his friends in the Tamil Nadu film industry, also known as Kollywood. The actor screened two premier shows on Wednesday; one of them was exclusively for superstar Rajinikanth in his house.
Rajinikanth was one of the few actors who supported Kamal Haasan when his film was temporarily banned by the Tamil Nadu government. He had even appealed to the Muslim community to allow the film's release.
"Mr Rajinikanth is like my extended family and he's watching the film at his home with his family," Kamal Haasan said.
Kollywood gave a thumbs up to the actor's most expensive movie ever. Actor Khushbu told NDTV, "I'm yet to come out of the movie's daze, it exceeds Hollywood and I regret I wasn't able to help Kamal sir in the film but I hope to make it to the film's sequel". The actor says she did not find anything that shows Muslims in a bad light.
"Afghanistan was never shown so beautifully and Kamal sir shows Muslims the right way, I'm a born Muslim and it all depends on how you look at it," she added.
Actor Sarath Kumar too had good things to say about the film. "It's a great effort by Kamal Haasan. It was like watching an English movie. We wish him all the best," he said. His wife and actor Radhika, who has paired with Kamal Haasan in many films told NDTV, "There is nothing bad about Muslims. It's an excellent movie and Kamal is the master of the game".
Among the celebrities was well-known choreographer and actor Mumtaj who said, "If it's Kamal Sir's movie we accept and expect anything. It's a wonderful movie, great cinematography and there's nothing that shows Muslims in bad light. I'm a Muslim and the film shows what's happening".
The film witnessed opposition by Muslim groups who said it showed them in bad light. Upset by this and the court battle despite the clearance given by the film certification board, Kamal Haasan had even threatened to leave the country. Finally the film had to be muted in seven scenes but the premier show was an emotional moment for the actor.
Kamal Haasan remembered his fans who stood with him. He said, "Fans sent me copies of their house documents to say it's mine, some sent their home keys, many sent cheques; how would I ever repay them, that's what our politics and stars are made of".
The two-week delay in the film's release in Tamil Nadu and Kamal Haasan's failed attempt for the film's DTH premier could have caused an estimated loss of around thirty to fifty-five crore rupees. But the actor must be hoping that the buzz the controversy has generated would set his cash registers ringing.
