Mumbai: The fate of the Mumbai Academy of the Moving Image (MAMI) Film Festival may have hung in balance in 2014, but it seems that as it enters its 17th edition, it's certainly powering through. The unveiling of the new MAMI logo in Mumbai on Wednesday saw some of Bollywood's most powerful celebrities, including filmmakers Kiran Rao, Karan Johar and producer Siddharth Roy Kapur, coming together to give the festival the encouragement it needs.
Newly-appointed Chairperson Kiran Rao outlined the vision of the festival and said, "We hope that this is going to be the start of an era where art house is nurtured and not just by foreign producers and foreign film festivals but by us. We hope that MAMI ushers in this new world. The basis of it will be stellar programming but we will have loads of glamour to make it exciting for everyone."
Karan Johar, who is on the board of trustees, as usual, had tongue firmly in cheek and the audience present in peals of laughter, but was serious when he said, "I'm so glad that MAMI has so many firefighters on its board. MAMI has to go beyond sounding like an Indian relative. It has to have resonance in the world of cinema."
Besides Karan Johar, the MAMI board of trustees also includes actors Deepika Padukone, Farhan Akhtar and Riteish Deshmukh and producer Siddharth Roy Kapur.
