Legendary Assamese folk singer Khagen Mahanta died in Guwahati on June 12 at the age of 72.
Mr Mahanta was known as the 'King of Bihu' and, with his wife Archana, played a huge role in reviving and popularising Axomiya folk music.
Mr Mahanta began singing professionally at the age of 15 and was among the earliest performers on All India Radio. He received the prestigious Sangeet Natak Academy award, among many other honours.
Mr Mahanta's son, Papon Angaraag Mahanta, is also an acclaimed musician, fronting fusion band The East India Company. He has also sung in films like Barfi! and Madras Cafe.
