Kolkata paid a hearty tribute tothe late musical genius Pankaj Kumar Mullick on his 106thbirth anniversary today.
To mark the occasion, the Pankaj Mullick Music and ArtFoundation hosted a musical soiree Remembrance at SisirMancha, where a number of songs composed, written or sung bythe Dadasaheb Phalke awardee were played.
Presented by Mullick's grandson Rajib Gupta, most of thesongs were rendered by Jhinuk Gupta, the musician'sgranddaughter-in-law.
The songs comprised Rabindrasangeets (Tagore songs),songs from Mahishasuramardini, modern Bengali songs and filmsongs.
"Two songs Tumi Khuje Pere Jake and Aakashe aiyemodhu that were played today are unpublished so far. Wewant his immortal creations to reach the ears of the moderngeneration," Gupta, also the spokesperson of the foundation,told PTI.
Mullick, who composed and sang the unforgettable PiyaMilan Ko Jaana in the Hindi version of Kapal Kundala(1939), is still revered among Bengalis for his AIR musicalprogarmme Mahishasuramardini, a musical evocation of thegoddess Durga on the auspicious day of Mahalaya.
Born in 1905, he had composed over 5,000 songs, includingthose of Tagore, in his 50-year-old illustrious career.
