Lady Gaga celebrates repeal of 'Don't ask, don't tell'

Lady Gaga celebrates repeal of 'Don't ask, don't tell'
Los Angeles: She had famously lent her voice to the campaign against the discriminatory 'Don't Ask Don't Tell' bill and Lady Gaga led the celebrity celebrations as the US Senate voted to let gays serve openly in the military.

Gaga posted a rare smiling picture of herself holding up a placard stating 'Full Equality' after the bill was repealed.

"Can't hold back the tears and pride. We did it! Our voice was heard and today the Senate repealed DADT. A triumph for equality after 17 years," tweeted the hitmaker who is currently in Paris on her international tour.

"Today I am so proud to be American. I wish I was home so I could throw a Parade. We are on the way to full equality," she added.

'DADT' is the common term for the policy restricting the US military from efforts to discover or reveal closeted gay, lesbian, and bisexual service members or applicants, while barring those that are openly gay, lesbian, or bisexual from military service.

Katy Perry and Pink also took to Twitter to celebrate the repeal.

"Supporting all our troops," Perry added to Pink's retweet, "Congrats to us. Repeal of DADT after 17 years of allowing Human Rights Violations. There's hope after all."

Joining them in the celebratory mood was singer Ricky Martin, who came out as gay in March this year after years of unhappily hiding his sexuality.

"One step closer to equality!! DADT is gone! Historical," he wrote.

Comedian Ellen Degeneres, who came out on the Oprah Winfrey show in 1997, was also thrilled.

"Thank you Senators for pushing us one step closer towards full equality," she tweeted.
