New Delhi:
When The Wolf Of Wall Street scored a Best Actor Oscar nomination for Leonardo DiCaprio this year, fans everywhere sang hopeful hallelujahs. Would this finally be the year the Academy hands Leo his Oscar?
Leonardo has been previously nominated for his roles in What's Eating Gilbert Grape, The Aviator and Blood Diamond, losing every time. Leo fans also think it a disgrace he was not nominated for Catch Me If You Can, Gangs Of New York, The Departed, Revolutionary Road and Django Unchained.
So, when CNN appeared to pre-emptively announce Leonardo as this year's Best Actor, the shrieks of joy online were deafening. A report on the Oscar-making process showed the camera zooming into a metal nameplate engraved with these word: Academy Award to Leonardo DiCaprio, Best Performance By An Actor In A Leading Role, The Wolf Of Wall Street, 2013.
Long overdue too, said tweets like these:
@amandacasey: CNN supposedly leaked the best actor winner and it was Leonardo DiCaprio hell yeah!
@Dr_White8: Leonardo finally getting his Oscar "@Joerobinow: CNN Showed the Oscar winner for Best Actor in a Leading Role
CNN accidentally leaks this year's Best Actor, screamed headlines on the internet. Until, they were reminded that nameplates such as the one bearing Leo's name are made for every nominee in advance. The winners get their nameplates tacked onto their Oscars at the post-ceremony Governors Ball and the unused nameplates are recycled the next year.
And, of course, final Oscar voting only begins today.
So no, Leonardo DiCaprio has not won the Best Actor Oscar this year. Not yet.
