Mani Ratnam will attend the ceremony at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York
New York:
A prestigious museum in New York will honour acclaimed Indian director Mani Ratnam with a special tribute, which it said has been "long overdue" for the "important filmmaker".
The 59-year-old director, will attend the ceremony at the Museum of the Moving Image for the tribute which will showcase three of his acclaimed films Roja, Bombay and Dil Se.The ceremony is scheduled to take place from July 31 to August 2.
The museum described the Roja director as "that rarest of film directors" who is "capable of making exquisitely crafted, hugely entertaining, yet intelligent and provocative films on a range of social and political issues.
The special tribute will feature the Bombay director in person with a trilogy of films that follow lovers against a backdrop of Indian politics.
The series is titled Politics as Spectacle: The Films of Mani Ratnam and the director will participate in conversations after each film.
Richard Pena, the Director Emeritus of New York Film Festival and Professor of Film Studies at Columbia University said, "A New York tribute to this important filmmaker is long overdue."
"The false dichotomies that are used to categorise films, art vs commercial cinema, entertainment vs political filmmaking disappear when one sees how easily the Mani Ratnam is able to combine aspects of all of them into his work," he added.
The museum's Deputy Director for Development Christina Marouda said the tribute offers devoted fans and new viewers, a rare opportunity to see his films on the big screen.
The museum has also hosted Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman earlier this year, showcasing the world premiere of his documentary Jai Ho to a packed theatre.
Last year, veteran Indian actor Om Puri was honoured by the museum for his contribution to cinema.
