Malayalam singer upbeat over Bollywood success

Chennai: Popular Malayalam playback singer Ranjini Jose who made her Bollywood debut with the song, 'Nain Tere Jhuke Jhuke', from director Ashuthosh Gowariker's period film 'Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey', says that she is keen on singing more Hindi numbers.

Sohail Sen had done the music for the Abhishek Bachchan-Deepika Padukone starrer, released in December last year, with lyrics by Javed Akhtar.

Ranjini was doing a show in the US when she got a call from Sohail.

"I was keen on doing a song in a Hindi movie and had circulated my CDs. It was then I got this offer but I had no inkling that I would be singing for a Gowariker movie," she told PTI.

It was only after the recording was complete that she got to know that it was for 'KHJJS.'    

Ranjini, who in a span of over five years has rendered more than 130 Malayalam songs, also is fond of doing her own music, in her spare time. She has cut an album in English.    

Besides,she has a penchant for picking up languages.    

"I learnt Spanish from the Internet and had done a Spanish song in my album but it is yet to be released," she said.    

Ranjini was drawn into the world of music by her mother, a musician.

"She taught me the nuances and that is how I got hooked. My father is a serious lover of music and is a constant encouragment," she said.

She made her debut in Malayalam filmdom rendering 'Theyyam Kaattil Thekkan Kaattil' in  'Mele Vaarayathe Malaakhakootil when she was studying in the 12th.

It proved to be the launching pad for this gifted young singer, who has studied Carnatic music.

"There has been no looking back after that," she said.

Her duet 'Maasam Maasam monsoon Maasam' with Jyotsna in superstar Mammootty's 'Aparichitan' a couple of years later  was a huge hit and further established her as a top rung
singer.

In 2009 she got an oportunity to play the main character in a Mohanlal starrer 'Red Chillies'.

In the movie,she rendered  'Mazha peyyanu', another hit which she lists as one of her favourites.
