New Delhi:
The name Malvika Raaj is yet to become popular with cine-goers but she's easily recognised when we put it this way - the actress who played the younger version of Kareena Kapoor in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. That was in 2001. 16 years later, Malvika Raaj is all set to make her full-fledged Bollywood debut with upcoming movie Captain Nawab, co-starring Emraan Hashmi. Captain Nawab is based on a true story and casts Emraan in the role of an army personnel. Talking to news agency IANS, director Tony D'Souza said that Malvika fits the role perfectly for the movie: "We are attempting something new and so it was imperative for us to get the casting right. We were privileged to have met Malvika and have her on board," he said.
Malvika became a prominent name in modelling after participating in 2010's Femina Miss India. She's also appeared at the recently wrapped Lakme Fashion Week for her designer sister Sonaakshi Raaj. She also recently featured in Telugu film Jayadev, which released in June and marks her second acting project after K3G.
The director of Malvika's maiden Bollywood film explains why the 23-year-old actress is an apt choice for the movie. "We put her through the usual rounds of auditions and she excelled in all of them. She is already well-versed with the business, having done a film as a child artist earlier and hailing from a family which has been in the film industry." Malvika is the daughter of filmmaker Bobby Raaj and Reena. She is the granddaughter of Bollywood actor Jagdish Raj, who is best known for playing cop in over 100 Bollywood movies.
Ahead of her launch in South cinema, Malvika said her hiatus from movies after K3G happened was because she wanted to finish studying first: "After Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, since I was a very young and a naughty child, my dad did not want me to pursue acting anymore as it would have distracted me from studies. Even as a child actor, I got many proposals to work, but my dad did not allow me."
