Actor Mel Gibson, who infamouslymade anti-Semitic remarks to a police officer while beingarrested for driving under the influence in 2006, is set toproduce a biblical drama about Jewish hero Judas Maccabeus.
Gibson, 55, is collaborating with screenwriter JoeEszterhas to tell the story of the celebrated Jewish warrior,who defeated the Greek-Syrian armies in the second century BCand inspired the Hanukkah celebration, said the HollywoodReporter.
Gibson, who was also accused of anti-Semitism by a numberof Jewish leaders when he released The Passion of the Christin 2004, wanted to tackle a movie about Maccabee for more thana decade.
Maccabbee, considered one of the great warriors in Jewishhistory, led a popular revolt against he Seleucid kingAntiochus IV, seizing Jerusalem and reconsecrating the Temple,an event remembered by the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah.
The Braveheart star has the option to direct theproject and it will be his second film as director. The firstbeing Apocalypto in 2006.
