Kochi: Lit candles spread an ambience of peace near the High Court junction in Kochi on Monday as the entire Malayalam film fraternity joined hands to demand a speedy and peaceful resolution of the Mullaperiyar dam issue.

The candle light protest brought together film societies like Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA) and Kerala Film Distributors Association(KFDA).

Actors like Innocent, Suresh Gopi, Dileep, Mukesh, Siddique and moviemakers like Kamal and Unnikrishnan took an oath pledging the Malayalam film industry's full support to those fighting for the cause. Asked why the film fraternity was late in reacting to the situation, director and FEFKA General Secretary B Unnikrishnan told 'Express' that it was not actually a delay but a preparation phase.

"We were one of the first to react to the Mullaperiyar issue. We had created slideshows to spread awareness on the issue. The 'delay' was the time it took to bring together all the artists from all the associations, despite their busy schedules," he said. "We have come out in the open to pledge our support as we are fully aware of the gravity of the situation."

Although superstars Mammootty and Mohanlal could not make it to the event, Mohanlal had sent his message lending his undivided support to the cause.
