New Delhi: There was Miley Cyrus last year, there was Miley Cyrus this year. At the MTV Video Music Awards 2014, Miley snatched the big prize of the show - Video of the Year - from Beyonce and Pharrell Williams (also Sia and Iggy Azalea) for Wrecking Ball, and sent up a young homeless man named Jesse to accept the award in her stead, looking on teary-eyed as Jesse delivered an emotional and passionate speech.

Last year, Miley's moment was much less glorious - an uninhibited display of twerking and rubbing up against co-performer Robin Thicke that left the world reeling.

Early winners included Katy Perry who won Best Female Video, Ed Sheeran who scooped Best Male Video, and Ariana Grande who took home Best Pop Video. Teen sensation Lorde scored Best Rock Video for Royals.

Drake won Best Hip-Hop Video, which was presented by rapper Common who called for a moment's silence in memory of Michael brown, the 18-year-old who was shot by police in Ferguson, Missouri.

Performances included a blockbuster show by Beyonce who was joined on-stage by husband Jay-Z and daughter Blue Ivy at the end. Beyonce also received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

Taylor Swift performed her non-country hit Shake It Off, and Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj and Jessie J opened the show with a set.

On the red carpet, Katy Perry and rapper Riff Raff recreated a fashion moment from 13 years ago, dressed in top-to-toe denim just like Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake were at the American Music Awards in 2001.
