Mumbai:
Veteran actress and TV director Neena Gupta says the television had grown business wise but become "regressive" as far as content was concerned. The maker of series like Dard, Saans and Siski told PTI that times had changed and she will not be able to make TV serials any more.
"The television had grown business wise but the content has become regressive," she said.
"Earlier, TV serials were small budget and were weekly shows. Producers were willing to attempt new ideas."
According to her, television was still in the infancy and the onus of bringing fresh ideas in software programming lay with the channels.
Gupta said she takes the audience reaction to her work very seriously. "My audience has still not forgiven me for the (nasty) game show, `Kamzor Kadi Kaun', I hosted a few years ago. This made me reject an offer of extremely negative character on television in a show which is currently running quite successfully."
The actor said shows like Saloni and Ladies Special, in which she acted, were different from the rest.
"Whether I direct or act, I ensure that some social message goes out to the audience."
About her new show Dil Se Diya Vachan, starting onZee TV later this month, Gupta said she plays a doctor who nurtures her daughter-in-law to face today's world.
"It is not the usual saas-bahu soap."
