New Delhi: Rajkummar Rao's latest film Newton, which released this Friday has already garnered a lot of appreciation in just two days and it has also been selected as India's official entry in Oscars' foreign language film category. Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap spoke in defence of Newton on Sunday, amidst claims that Rajkummar Rao's film is inspired by a 2001 Iranian movie titled Secret Ballot. Of this Anurag Kashyap tweeted and wrote: "Newton is as much a copy of Secret Ballot as The Avengers is of Watan Ke Rakhwale" while his another tweet read that "Newton is an award winner from Berlin Fest and I can promise you those curators watch more films in a year than rest of us do in a lifetime."

Newton director Amit V Masurkar also said, "The story was born from my heart. I had no idea about Secret Ballot.
Newton is getting a great response at the box office. Apart from the news that the film will represent India at the Oscars, the movie has registered 'remarkable growth,' tweeted trade analyst Taran Adarsh.
Newton, which stars Rajkummar Rao, revolves around a government employee who struggles to supervise voting in a forest area of Chhattisgarh, controlled by Maoists.
Newton, produced by Manish Mundra, had its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival, where it even won an award.
At the Oscars, Newton will compete against Angelina Jolie's Cambodian film First They Killed My Father, Pakistani film Saawan, Sweden's The Square, Germany's In the Fade and Chile's A Fantastic Woman in the Best Film in Foreign Language category.
