Aamir Khan and Rajkummar Rao at the 9th annual GQ Awards in Mumbai
New Delhi:
Rajkummar Rao is excited as his latest film Newton has been announced as India's official entry to the 90th Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Film category. Speaking to the media at the GQ Men of the Year Award on Friday night, the 33-year-old actor said that he will seek superstar Aamir Khan's advice on the promotional strategy of the film, reported news agency IANS. "I will definitely call him and meet him because Lagaan was there at the Oscars and we are really proud of the film. So I am sure Aamir sir will help us a lot," IANS quoted Rajkummar Rao as saying.
"It's just got announced and it's too soon to decide but our team is going to meet and we will plan something about it because there has to be strategy. We will be going to America to promote the film," he added.
Aamir Khan's 2001 movie Lagaan is one of the few Indian films to have made it to the final five of the Oscar nominations. No Indian film has ever won.
Rajkummar Rao's girlfriend Patralekha, who accompanied the actor to the event, said she is 'very thrilled.'
"Newton is a film that should get in top five films at the Oscars because it's really good and relevant and shows different side of India," IANS quoted Patralekha as saying.
Newton, directed by Amit V Masurkar, narrates the story of a rookie government clerk, who is sent to a Naxal-controlled town in Chhattisgarh to conduct free and fair elections. The film managed to earn Rs 90 lakhs on its opening day, reported trade analyst Taran Adarsh.
Newton also stars Pankaj Tripathi, Anjali Patil, Raghubir Yadav, Sanjay Mishra and Hardik Meriya in pivotal roles.
