Legendary singer-composer BhupenHazarika, undergoing treatment at a Mumbai hospital since June29, turned 86 today and spent the day with family members andclose friends in the ICU.
Doctors attending to him at the Kokilaben DhirubhaiAmbani Hospital said the Dada Saheb Phalke Award winner'shealth has shown remarkable improvement.
"Around 11 am, Bhupenda asked for a cake. It was quite along time after which he spoke. We arranged for a cake and hehappily cut it," a spokesperson of the hospital said.Hazarika, who has a genius for weaving a magical tapestryout of traditional Assamese music and lyrics, also sat on achair with the help of support from his attendants, thespokesperson said.
Fans and well-wishers gathered at the hospital to wishthe veteran singer, regarded as one of the greatest livingcultural communicators of South Asia.Hazarika was admitted to the ICU after he complained ofbreathlessness and drowsiness.
He had lent his voice to the recently-released filmGandhi To Hitler, where he sang Mahatma Gandhi's favouritebhajan Vaishnav jan.
