Lumet, who suffered from lymphoma, died at his home inManhattan yesterday, confirmed his stepdaughter Leslie Gimbel,reported New York Times online.

Lumet, born in Philadelphia in June 1924, was one ofthe leading film directors of the 20th Century, directing morethan 40 movies.

His films, nominated for more than 50 Oscars, wereknown for their gritty unsentimentality and exploredcomplicated themes.

Lumet directed Faye Dunaway in the 1976 filmNetwork and Ingrid Bergman in Murder On The Orient Expressin 1974, with both becoming Oscar-winning performances.After missing out on Best Director Oscar four times,he received an honorary Academy Award in 2005, presented tohim by Al Pacino, who he directed in Serpico.

Lumet made his directional debut with 12 AngryMen in 1957 which was critically acclaimed and received Oscarnominations for Best Director and Best Picture.

Lumet was married four times, to actress Rita Gam,socialite Gloria Vanderbilt, Gail Jones and his widow MaryGimbel, who he was married to for 31 years when he died.

He leaves two daughters, Amy and Jenny, ninegrandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
