Mumbai:
All is not well with Peepli Live director Anusha Rizvi and Aamir Khan. The film has been nominated as India's representation at theOscars, but Anusha says she will not lobby for Peepli Livein the US.
"I thought this was the last question about Aamir Khan," that's Peepli Live director's response to almost everything to do with her much talked about film and, of course, its producer Aamir Khan.
It's been a dream run for the first time filmmaker, whose smart satire is India's submission for the Oscars. But despite that, and the critical and commercial success it has seen, Rizvi seems less than pleased.
"I will not be going to promote Peepli Live in USA. It's just America's national awards, right?" said Anusha.
And, lest we forget, it's the film world's ultimate prize but, of course, is not the first time the director has expressed displeasure about the Peepli Live's promotional overdrive. Even her husband and co-director Mahmood Farooqui recently admitted that they had taken a step back from the rounds even though their famous producer ensured that it got the kind of pre-release attention that few non-mainstream films get to see.
"I would rather have 50 people watch Peepli Live without all this promotion than 200 people watch it with the hype," said Anusha.
This is not the first time Aamir has been accused of dominating the projects he's part of. But then again, he's the only star who has had four of his films selected as India's best shot for an Oscar. So if Peepli Live does get shortlisted as one of the top five foreign films at the Academy, we can only wonder if the director will still feel the same way.
