Tamil actor-choreographer Prabhu Deva and his estranged wife Latha have filed a petition seeking divorce by mutual consent before a Family Court. It is reported to be the costliest ever divorce in the Tamil film industry.
Prabhu and Latha appeared before the Family Court judge I Pandurangan and filed the petition seeking to dissolve the marriage solemnised as per Hindu rites and customs in September 1995.
Latha was an actress before her marriage to Prabhu Deva and the couple has three children. Following difference of opinion, Prabhu Deva and his wife have been living separately for more than two years.
Three months ago Latha filed a petition seeking restoration of conjugal rights after newspaper reports surfaced about Prabhu Deva's alleged affair with actress Nayanathara and the consequent neglect of his family.
However, Prabhu Deva and Latha have now decided to seek divorce admitting that all efforts taken by mediators and elders in their families to resolve their marital problems had failed.
Latha also withdrew her earlier petitions pending before the court. The judge adjourned the matter for further hearing.
According to reports, Prabhu Deva has agreed to give his sea side villa at Injambakkam, a bungalow in upmarket Anna Nagar along with three flats and a property in Hyderabad and two cars as part of the settlement. The total market value of these assets is estimated to be between Rs 25-30 cr.
It is believed the actor will pay a one-time alimony of Rs 10 Lakh to Latha. Prabhu Deva will also take care of the educational and medical expenses of his two sons.
