When Priyanka Chopra went missing from the first trailer launch of Krrish 3 not so long ago, we were told that she was busy with her singing career in Hollywood. She did appear in a video to congratulate the team on the launch of the trailer but that was that. Tabloids now claim that just weeks before Krrish 3's release, Priyanka has outright refused to be seen publicly with co-star Kangana Ranaut who plays a mutant named Kaaya in the film. If true, that's bad news for the publicity team of Krrish 3.
Both Priyanka and Kangana have worked together before in Madhur Bhandarkar's 2008 film Fashion, which fetched both ladies National Awards for their performances. Priyanka won the National Award for Best Actress as small town girl-turned-supermodel Meghna; Kangana won the National Award for Best Supporting Actress for her scene-stealing portrayal as drug-addled, troubled supermodel Shonali.
Krrish 3 is something of a repeat situation. Priyanka will be seen in a leading role, romancing titular superhero Krrish played by Hrithik Roshan, while Kangana will be seen in a negative, supporting role. But herein lies the twist. Playing the damsel in distress is hardly exciting. There's only so much for the leading lady to do other than be rescued by the knight in black leather. Kangana, on the other hand, is more than a pretty face - she plays a mutant and that provides the actor in her with a huge canvas to play with.
There has been new found love for Kangana in the industry lately. Her line-up of films is not just impressive but expansive as well. In a TV interview with film critic Anupama Chopra, she says, "Personally I am in the best phase of my career. I have never been given such strong characters and title roles. Krissh 3 is a superwoman role. Filmmakers come to me with so much conviction that I feel really thrilled that they find their way and put up with me."
Priyanka may have Gunday and the Mary Kom biopic in her kitty, but she has probably seen the first cut of Krrish 3 and realized that Kangana's mutant could perhaps be the talking point of 2013's most awaited film.
Especially as Priyanka previously confessed to NDTV: "I have been a damsel in distress in this movie who has to be saved and flown away into the beauty of the skies."
Kangana may be the one with superpowers in this one but makes no bones about who she thinks is more super in real life. She says, "Priyanka is a very enthusiastic and multi-faceted actress. She can sing, dance, has been a Miss World as well as a pop star. She is a superwoman kind of a person."
There is still some time before Krrish 3 hits the screens worldwide. We'll soon see how the events unfold as the many rounds of promotions still remain. Maybe it's just tabloid chatter but if Kangana is kept away from promotions, we'll know that PC does indeed have some superpowers of her own.
