Punjab extends an olive branch to Prakash Jha

New Delhi: Prakash Jha's Aarakshan got a new lease of life from the Punjab government; in an effort to preserve Jha's creative freedom, the state government ordered a probe into the film's content, which uses reservation as its peg to highlight the pitfalls of India's education system.

The review committee, which was formed specially to look into the film's content, came to the conclusion that the film would not disrupt the peace due to its take on the issue of reservation, allowing Punjab to lift its ban on Aarakshan.

Following a precedent set by the Uttar Pradesh government, Punjab had banned the film from releasing in its territory, fearing the film's sensitive content would incite mass violence. The Andhra Pradesh government had soon followed suit.

The state government then requested Jha to make a total of three cuts to his film to which he subsequently agreed. However, the producers of the film are yet to reply to the government's order.

Caught between the director's and producer's conflicting views, it is still not clear whether or not Aarakshan will release in Punjab; the government's part in the process is now officially over.
