Qarib Qarib Singlle, Irrfan Khan and Parvathy's new film, has earned Rs 1.75 crore at the box office on Friday (Day 1), trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted. It marks Malayalam actress Parvathy's Bollywood debut. "Fri 1.75 cr. India biz... Expected to witness growth over the weekend witness growth over the weekend," read Mr Adarsh' tweet. Qarib Qarib Singlle is a contemporary love story. Two people (Irrfan and Parvathy) embark upon an unusual journey which eventually becomes an adventure. Irrfan Khan plays a small-time poet Yogi and Parvathy features as Jaya Sasidharan, a young widow. Qarib Qarib Singlle is directed by Tanuja Chandra, who has previously made films like Sangharsh and Dushman.
Here's Qarib Qarib Singlle's box office score.
In his review for NDTV, film critic Saibal Chatterjee gave Qarib Qarib Singlle 3 stars out of 5. "A light-hearted traipse through loves lost and lives interrupted, Tanuja Chandra's Qarib Qarib Singlle - yes, it is single with double 'l' - isn't anywhere near qarib qarib perfect. The unhurried rhythm of Qarib Qarib Singlle might put off average filmgoers but if you see value in a film that breaks away from norm and derives strength from understatement rather than flashy storytelling methods, your search ends here," he wrote.
Ahead of the film's release, Irrfan told news agency IANS, "I am not nervous, I am excited as you don't get to do stories like this very often. It is a romantic tale. The romance in the film has old-charm to it, like we use to see in childhood. And it has characters you can relate with."
Qarib Qarib Singlle released along with Rajkummar Rao and Kriti Kharbanda's Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana, which was received poorly by the critics.
