Mumbai: The week gone by has not been a good one at all for films that released last Friday. The trade says that while Kamal Hassan's Vishwaroop has managed to bring in decent collections, its huge cost goes against the film.
Bejoy Nambiar's David is disappointing and Mai that marked Asha Bhosle's acting debut falls short of expectations. Listen...Amaya and Midnight's Children have been tagged as disasters at the box office. On the other hand Abbas-Mustan's Race 2 has managed to rake in decent collections even in its second weekend.
Race 2 has managed to collect Rs 3.18 crore on Friday, Rs 6 crore on Saturday and Rs 14.03 crore on Sunday, making its 10-day collection around Rs 81 crore.
Nambiar's film has collected about R 1.98 crore in its opening weekend (Friday - Rs 49.6 lakh, Saturday - Rs 68.93 lakh, Sunday - Rs 80.29 lakh). While Vishwaroop has collected R 7.17 crore in its opening weekend with Friday being Rs 1.68 cr, Saturday being Rs 2.25 cr and Sunday being Rs 3.23 cr.
Trade analyst Amod Mehra says, "It's a very bad weekend for Bollywood with all the films falling flat on their faces at the ticket windows. While Vishwaroop can best be termed as having had an average weekend, the prospects of it getting any better are slim. Though it did reasonably well on Sunday. The other films are disasters and the upcoming period also looks bleak as exams are soon to start."
Mehra hopes that Akshay Kumar's upcoming thriller Special 26 and Prabhu Deva's dance film ABCD - AnyBody Can Dance break this jinx.
Atul Mohan, trade expert says, "Vishwaroop was helped by the controversy and the film is also decent. But that's about it. On the other hand Mai was very disappointing. Also releasing multiple films on the same day has proved to be disastrous."
