Saif Ali Khan and Rahul Gandhi arrive at the venue
New Delhi:
High profile guests, including Rahul Gandhi and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, attended Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor's reception in Delhi. The power list included politicians Kamal Nath, Farooq Abdullah, Arun Jaitley, Sitaram Yechury, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Shashi Tharoor, Amar Singh and Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. Also among the 500 guests invited were Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's wife Gursharan Kaur, former cricketer Kapil Dev, maestro Amjad Ali Khan, designer Ritu Kumar, actress Nandita Das and the Planning Commission's Montek Singh Ahluwalia.
Congress chief Sonia Gandhi was invited but did not attend.
Kareena's Heroine director Madhur Bhandarkar and designer Manish Malhotra flew in from Mumbai earlier today, as did the bride's parents Randhir and Babita Kapoor, sister Karisma with her children, and aunt Reema Jain with son Armaan. Saif's sisters Soha and Saba were overseeing proceedings in Delhi. Soha's boyfriend, actor Kunal Khemu, was the man-in-charge. Manish Malhotra said it was "fun being part of the beautiful wedding".
Saif's mother Sharmila Tagore, in pale yellow silk and antique jewellery, spoke to the press outside their residence on Aurangzeb Road, where the reception is being held. She said: "Bless the couple and join in our happiness . The venue, the decor is not important. What I am wearing is not important, the marriage is. We are all very happy. There was no reception in Mumbai, just the marriage. We danced, we had a lot of fun. There is no celebration in Pataudi, not now at least. "We may have something later. Abhi sab thak gaye hain. Abhi daal-chawal ka time aa gaya hain. (Right now we are all very tired and want things to be simple.)"
Kareena's reception outfit, an "old-world" pink gharara, was designed by Manish Malhotra. Saif was dressed in Raghavendra Rathore.
The reception was Mughal-themed with antique props used as décor. Cream curtains with jasmine and rajnigandha flowers added to the ambience with shehnai being played along with a band.
"We are decorating the entire place. The theme is off-white and gold with mogra flowers. We have a stage set up inside and it is all going to be in mughal style. We have used antique props, about 200 years old for the decoration," Tipsy Anand, from event management company Good Earth, told PTI.
Kapil Dev gave the food and snacks a thumbs up.
Security around the Aurangzeb Road venue was increased because of the VVIP guest list.
"We are expecting a lot of politicians and B-town celebs so we will be taking extra precaution so that the guests don't have trouble entering the venue. We will be only allowing people who are on the guest list," said a representative of a Proman securitytech, engaged for the purpose.
The celebrations for the year's most-anticipated wedding began way in advance with a pre-wedding bash at Kareena's Mumbai residence on Sunday.
The wedding took place at Saif's Bandra residence in the form of a registered marriage on Tuesday, after which the couple exchanged vows at the Taj Mahal hotel in the evening and hosted a post-wedding party attended by family, friends and who's who from Bollywood.
Shah Rukh Khan with wife Gauri, Preity Zinta, Karan Johar, Tusshar Kapoor, Salman Khan's sister Alvira, Anil Kapoor with daughter Sonam were among the attendees at the wedding party. (With PTI inputs)
