New York: Diwali is still more than a month away but Indians in New York got off to an early start to the festivities with day-long celebrations at Times Square showcasing Indian culture, cuisine and bringing together renowned artists from the Indian film industry.

Hundreds of Indian-Americans gathered at the popular tourist destination on Sunday, September 22, for the 'Diwali at Times Square' extravaganza presented by Maharashtra Tourism.

Actor Ranbir Kapoor, his parents Rishi and Neetu Kapoor and singer Shankar Mahadevan made a special appearance at a concert that showcased traditional Indian dances and music.

A section of Times Square was bustling with people dressed in traditional attire as they lined up before booths set up to showcase Indian cuisine, music and fashion.

Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation Managing Director Jagdish Patel said that the event was an opportunity to bring one of the most important and vibrant Indian festivals to New York and invite people from the city and across the world to experience Diwali in India.

Later, the Kapoor trio danced to popular songs from their movies, enthralling the audience with their performance.

Dressed in a black sherwani, the young Kapoor lad danced and interacted with his fans as his father recalled visiting the city years ago and expressing gratitude for the adulation shown to him and his family.
