Ranveer Singh in a still from Bajirao Mastani
New Delhi:
Actor Ranveer Singh's acclaimed and awarded portrayal of Peshwa Bajirao I has earned him a prize that has left some people a little bit surprised. The 30-year-old actor has been named 'Maharashtrian of the Year,' an honour bestowed by Marathi publication Lokmat and social media is having trouble wrapping its head around this.
Ranveer was chosen by a jury of politicians Sushil Kumar Shinde and Praful Patel, activist Medha Patkar, lawyer Ujwal Nikam, businessman Harsh Goenka and filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar.
Why they picked him - Ranveer Singh is a Mumbaikar of Sindhi origin - is what Twitter is still trying to figure out. 'Maharashtrian of the Year' trended for a good part of Friday and here's what Twitter's saying (their choice: Nana Patekar).
Ranveer's fans were thrilled, of course.
Past winners have included actors Amitabh Bachchan and Dilip Kumar, neither of them Maharashtrian.

Maharashtrian Of The Year
If "Maharashtrian Of The Year" is Ranveer Singh for #BajiraoMastani then "Indian Of The Year" should be Salman Khan for Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

Maharashtrian of the Year is Ranveer Singh for "Bajirao" performance? By that yardstick, Priyanka Chopra is a Manipuri!
