New Delhi:
Tamil superstar Rajinikanth turned 62 on 12.12.12 and asked fans for a special birthday gift at a function organized in his honour in Chennai. Give up smoking and drinking, said Rajini Sir.
Rajinikanth became famous for his screen mannerisms, among them his inimitable style of popping a cigarette into his mouth. But now he urges fans to kick the habit.
On December 13, a day after the star's birthday, a multitude of Rajini fans gathered at the YMCA grounds in Chennai and were pleasantly surprised to see their superstar on stage along with several other stars who had turned up to greet the actor. The superstar, who has quit both cigarettes and alcohol himself, urged his fans to give up smoking and drinking. "As someone who has enjoyed and 'experienced' it all I tell you, please give up smoking and drinking," he said.
The superstar recollected the harrowing experience he went through when he was hospitalised for a kidney ailment in 2006 and how it was the prayers of fans that gave him a new lease of life. Rajinikanth said, "Doctors told my family it would be a miracle if I survived".
He also used the opportunity to drive home the point against smoking and drinking: "My health problem is due to my own fondness to tobacco and alcohol. There was a time I used to drink a lot. It's important to have a good friend, more than God and a good wife. Because of bad company, I got into drinking and as more money came in I tried all expensive drinks".
This struck a chord with fans and eye-witnesses say many threw away cigarettes and match boxes.
Mr P Sridhar, President of Rajini Fans Association, LIC unit told NDTV "fans were so thrilled to see the superstar on stage. With no publicity 15000 fans gathered at the venue to greet him. Now we hope he would meet fans more frequently".
Rajinikanth used the occasion to clear the air yet again that he has no plans to enter politics. He explained "no leader dreams to do bad for people, but others don't let them do good".
Rajinikanth's birthday celebrations also included the release of the 3D version of his 2007 blockbuster Sivaji. Rajinikanth is also in the process of completing next film Kochadaiyaan, directed by daughter Soundarya R Ashwin.
